Your phone is your lifeline in a power cut: for calls, updates and checking on family. Here is how to keep it going.

Make your battery last

  • Turn on low power or battery saver mode.
  • Lower the screen brightness.
  • Close apps you are not using and turn off Bluetooth if you do not need it.
  • Use your phone torch only as a last resort. A proper head torch saves your battery.

Ways to charge without mains power

  • A charged power bank. Keep one topped up at all times.
  • A wind-up or solar radio with USB output. The Daykit radio has a built-in 2000mAh power bank, and the wind-up emergency radio can give your phone emergency charge by hand crank or solar.
  • Your car. A USB car charger works if you can safely sit in your car with the engine running outdoors. Never run an engine in a closed garage.
