From cyclones and floods to earthquakes, New Zealand homes can be left without power for days. Civil Defence advises every household to have what it needs to get through at least three days on its own.
Who to call
- Call 111 if there is a fallen power line, sparks, fire or danger to life. Stay well away and treat every line as live.
- Report the power cut to your lines company (the network that owns the poles and wires). Their faults number is on your power bill and their website.
During a power cut
- Use torches, not candles. A searchlight and head torch are safer.
- Keep the fridge and freezer closed.
- Listen to the radio for Civil Defence updates. A wind-up radio works without power or mobile signal.
- Never use a generator or barbecue indoors.
- Check on your neighbours, especially older people.
What to have ready
- Wind-up or solar radio
- Torches and a solar lantern with power bank
- Water and food for at least three days
- A first aid kit
- Warm clothes, gloves and a hand warmer
