Staying Safe on a Windy Day

Staying Safe on a Windy Day

Strong winds can bring down trees and power lines and cause power cuts. Here is how to stay safe.

Before the wind arrives

  • Secure garden furniture, bins and anything that could blow away.
  • Close windows and doors properly.
  • Charge your phone and torches.
  • Get your power cut kit ready: torch, wind-up radio, warm layers and a flask.

During strong winds

  • Stay indoors where possible and avoid walking or driving near trees.
  • Keep away from damaged buildings and loose roof tiles.
  • Never touch or go near fallen power lines. Stay well back and call 105.
  • Check official weather warnings for updates.

If the power goes off

Use a torch rather than candles, keep the fridge closed, and call 105 for updates. Our step-by-step power cut guide explains what to do.
