Pets can get anxious when the house goes dark and quiet. A little planning keeps them safe and calm.

Dogs and cats

  • Keep them in the same warm room as you.
  • Give them extra blankets or bedding.
  • Stay calm: pets pick up on your mood.
  • Use a torch rather than candles, which can be knocked over by tails and paws.

Walking the dog in the dark

If street lights are out, take a bright torch or wear a head torch so you can see and be seen.

Fish, reptiles and small animals

  • Fish tank filters and heaters stop in a power cut. Wrap the tank in blankets to hold in heat and avoid feeding during the cut.
  • Reptiles in heated enclosures can get cold quickly. Wrap the enclosure and keep the room warm.
  • Move small animal cages away from cold windows and draughts.
