Sometimes your local electricity network operator needs to switch off the power to carry out repairs or upgrades. This is called a planned power cut, and you are usually told in advance.

How will I know?

Your network operator usually writes to you or sends a message with the date and expected times. If you are unsure, call 105 to check.

How to prepare

  • Charge phones, laptops and power banks the night before.
  • Have a torch ready if the work runs into the evening.
  • Fill a flask with hot water for drinks.
  • Keep the fridge and freezer closed during the cut.
  • Switch off sensitive equipment so it is not affected when the power returns.
  • If you work from home, plan offline tasks for that time.

Medical equipment

If anyone in your home relies on powered medical equipment, contact your network operator as soon as you get notice and ask about the Priority Services Register.
