What to Do After a Storm

What to Do After a Storm

Once the wind and rain have died down, there are still things to watch out for.

Stay safe outside

  • Watch out for fallen trees, branches and debris.
  • Never touch fallen power lines or anything touching them. Stay back and call 105.
  • Avoid walking or driving through flood water.

Check your home

  • Look for damage to roofs, fences and windows from the ground. Do not climb on the roof.
  • Take photos of any damage for your insurer.
  • If the power is still off, keep the fridge and freezer closed and use torches rather than candles.

Look after each other

Check on neighbours, especially older people or anyone living alone. Our guide to helping elderly neighbours has some ideas.

Get ready for next time

If the storm caught you without a torch or radio, now is a good time to put a simple kit together. See our storm preparation checklist.
