When the Met Office names a storm, there is usually a day or two to get ready. Use this checklist to prepare your home and family before the wind and rain arrive.

Outside your home

  • Bring in or tie down garden furniture, bins and trampolines.
  • Close and secure gates, sheds and garage doors.
  • Park away from trees and walls if you can.

Inside your home

  • Charge your phone and any power banks.
  • Put a torch where everyone can find it, and check it is charged.
  • Have a wind-up radio ready for news if the power and Wi-Fi go down.
  • Fill a flask with a hot drink.
  • Get blankets, gloves and hand warmers out.
  • Keep a first aid kit to hand.
  • Save 105 in your phone for power cut updates.

During the storm

  • Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
  • Keep away from fallen power lines and report them by calling 105.
  • Check official weather warnings and local news for updates.
