A power cut can be unsettling for little ones. A bit of preparation makes it much easier for the whole family.

Light without risk

Avoid candles around children. Battery or rechargeable lights are much safer. Children often love wearing a head torch, which can turn a power cut into an adventure.

Keeping them warm

  • Dress babies and children in layers, with a hat and socks.
  • Keep everyone together in one warm room.
  • Follow safe sleep advice for babies: do not overheat them or add loose blankets or pillows to cots.

Feeding

If you bottle feed, think ahead about how you will make up feeds without a kettle. A flask of freshly boiled water can help, but always follow NHS guidance on safely preparing formula.

Keep them busy

  • Torch shadow puppets and stories.
  • Board games, cards and colouring by torchlight.
  • A wind-up radio for music.
