The lights have gone out and the house is quiet. Here is a simple step-by-step guide to staying safe and calm in a power cut.

  1. Get some light. Use a torch rather than candles. A head torch keeps your hands free.
  2. Check if it is just you. Look outside to see if neighbours and street lights are off too. If only your home is affected, check your fuse box or trip switch.
  3. Call 105. This free number connects you to your local network operator to report the cut or get an update on when power will be back.
  4. Switch off appliances. Turn off things like the oven, hair straighteners and heaters so nothing is left on when the power returns. Leave one light switched on so you know when it is back.
  5. Keep the fridge and freezer closed to keep food cold for longer.
  6. Stay informed. A wind-up radio gives you local news without mains power or Wi-Fi.
  7. Keep warm. Wear layers and use hand warmers if the heating is off.
  8. Check on others. Make sure elderly or vulnerable neighbours are OK.
