Breaking down or getting stuck in bad weather is much less stressful if you have a few essentials in the boot.

Your winter car kit

  • A bright torch for looking under the bonnet or signalling for help.
  • Warm clothes, a blanket and gloves.
  • Hand warmers to keep warm while you wait.
  • A first aid kit.
  • A phone charger or charged power bank.
  • Ice scraper and de-icer.
  • Water and snacks.
  • A flask of hot drink for longer journeys.
  • A shovel and something for grip, such as an old mat, if you live somewhere it snows.

Before you travel

  • Check the weather forecast and travel news.
  • Make sure you have enough fuel or charge.
  • Tell someone your route and when you expect to arrive.
